Home Projects to Complete While Sheltering in Place this Winter

As temperatures drop and the dreary December days drag on and on, many are in need of some inspirational projects to do around the house while sheltering in place and waiting for the much-anticipated vaccine. Now is the perfect time to get started on that project you have been planning for the past four (or even ten!) years. Hopefully, this list will spark some creative ideas and add some holiday joy to your current stay-at-home living situation.

Be Confident, Have Patience, and Paint

If nothing else, set aside an afternoon to mix things up and add some color -- and spice! -- to your living space. Pick a room or space, grab a roller and drop cloth, and start painting! Change the color of your living room, or add an accent wall to your master bedroom. Whatever you can dream up, you can do. Are you the adventurous type, someone who wouldn't fathom just painting one color? Check out this Pinterest page for some eye-catching ideas.

The Kitchen is the Heart of the Home

Aside from upgrading the appliances in your kitchen, there are many ways to bring this much-loved space into the 2020s for less than the price of a new refrigerator. Refinishing your counter top sounds like a daunting task, but take my word for it -- you can do this! This project will take longer than a day, and it is a bit messy, but the end result is well worth the effort.

Another quick and inexpensive way to give your kitchen an updated look is to change out the hardware on the cabinetry. Just make sure to measure before you purchase so that you don't end up with hardware that doesn't fit the existing holes.

For those of you who are a little more motivated or adventurous, adding or changing out the backsplash in the kitchen is a great way to add a pop of color or an interesting design.

Wainscoting Is Back!

Regardless of how you pronounce the word -- long o or short o -- wainscoting can add a bit of depth to a room. Wainscoting was originally used for insulation and to protect the walls of a home. Nowadays, we use it primarily for ornamentation, and there are so many interesting wainscoting ideas out there to give your room or space a dramatic transformation. Simply take a moment to assess your handyperson abilities, and take your pick! For a peek at a thrifty way to create a faux wainscoted wall, watch this video tutorial.

Organize, organize, organize

If you haven't yet jumped on the organizing/purging band wagon ushered in by the pandemic, what is holding you back? Colder weather makes outdoor activity more difficult, so you should have plenty of time to devote to this daunting task! You don't have to break the bank with expensive containers from a well-known store (yes, you know the one...). You can easily find storage solutions at your local thrift store or one of the big box stores in your area. If it is just too much for you to do on your own, our local professional organizing business, Consider It Done, is always an option.

Whatever project you choose to tackle this Winter, have fun with it, be well, make sure you have the proper tools and check out these reads for some more easy home reno and decoration ideas:
